Study: Infiniti Drivers Get the Most Tickets

Your automotive stereotypes probably don’t hold up to examination. Which brand has the most speeders, for instance? I’ve heard a lot of theories on that over the years. But I can’t recall anyone pitching Infiniti.

According to a new study, owners of cars from Nissan’s luxury arm get more speeding tickets than drivers of any other brand.

The individual car model most likely to be ticketed? You’re right — it’s a BMW.

But it’s the last BMW you’d expect. Drivers of the quirky little BMW i3 electric car, discontinued after 2021, are more likely to be caught speeding than drivers of any overpowered M3 or M5, according to the study.

The BMW behind the fewest citations is the fun, quick little Z4 convertible, proving the old automotive journalist wisdom that if you love to drive, you should get a car that’s fun at neighborhood speeds.

Methodology a Little Flawed, But Amusing

The numbers come from Insurify, an insurance comparison shopping service. They have a good read on speeding tickets because applicants must disclose past tickets when applying for car insurance.

But that can make their data a little unreliable. People, not cars, get tickets. So, if you currently own a Honda but once got a ticket while driving a rented Ferrari, you show up in Insurify’s study as a Honda owner with a ticket.

The data won’t hold up to the strictest scrutiny. But you didn’t click on this article expecting scientific rigor. You wanted confirmation of your theory that Porsche owners all speed, or BMW buyers think their car’s price included owning the road, or whatever bias you inherited from your dad.

Percentage of drivers with a speeding ticket by brand:

The average across all brands, Insurify says, is 7.1%.

  1. Infiniti, 8.7%
  2. Scion, 8.4%
  3. Volkswagen, 8.3%
  4. Subaru, 8%
  5. Mazda, 7.7%
  6. Audi, 7.6%
  7. Kia, 7.6%
  8. Honda, 7.5%
  9. BMW, 7.4%
  10. Hyundai, 7.4%

The brands behind the fewest speeding tickets, Insurify says, are Cadillac (5.4%), Tesla (5%), and Volvo (2.7%).
