Recall Alert: Porsche Taycan, Audi E-Tron Charging Issue

Porsche and Audi, both brands of the Volkswagen Group, have issued a series of recalls related to an issue in some of their electric cars.

Recalled models include the:

The cars use the same high-voltage battery modules. Porsche says it is aware of several battery fires that appear to have occurred after charging. The companies believe the problem exists only in specific “clusters of production.”

Both vehicles report data on their battery health to the companies that built them unless owners deactivate that setting.

The companies have studied that data and split the vehicles into two groups.

Porsche and Audi advise owners of vehicles in both groups not to charge the cars’ batteries above 80% of their capacity.

For one group, the companies say they have sufficient data to know that some battery modules should be replaced. Dealers will replace battery modules in those cars.

For the other, the companies will continue to study telematics data to determine which batteries may need replacement. If owners have deactivated telematics reporting, dealers must physically inspect the batteries.

By law, recall repairs are always free.

Automakers try to reach every owner with recall notices, but some always slip through the cracks. That leaves millions of Americans driving cars with safety defects eligible for free fixes. Find out if your vehicle has unaddressed recalls at our recall center.
