Porsche: Hybrid 911 Coming 5/28

“Following an extensive development and testing program, the new 911 – complete with a performance-focused hybrid system – is ready for series production,” Porsche has announced.

The company promises the hybrid 911 is “8.7 seconds faster than its predecessor” around Germany’s famed Nürburgring nordschleife – a racing circuit automakers routinely use to test performance cars. The track touts 154 turns and more than 1,000 feet of elevation change into just under 13 miles, creating a challenge for any car and a marketing opportunity for automakers.

The key to Porsche’s claim, however, isn’t which race track they used. It’s which “predecessor.” Porsche currently sells more than two dozen different models of the 911. Outrunning the base model isn’t the same challenge as outrunning the GT3 RS.

We’ll find out more at the end of the month. Porsche promises a full reveal of the hybrid 911 on May 28.

In the meantime, we’ll have to make do with hyperbole. Porsche brand ambassador Jörg Bergmeister says, “We have more grip, significantly more power, and the spontaneous response of the performance hybrid is a great advantage.”

Porsche says the test car “was “equipped with standard road tires, plus the aero kit with a fixed rear wing that has been available as an option previously, providing increased downforce at high speeds.”
